On May 12, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale struck Sichuan province in southwestern China, killing thousands of people. Many of those who've survived have lost their jobs, their homes and most importantly, their loved ones. The American Red Cross is working with its partners in the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, including the Red Cross Society of China, and other partners to assist those affected by this disaster.

 The death toll from Cyclone Nagris continues to rise. Unofficial estimates from the United Nations suggest that as many as 102,000 people have died, and up to 1.9 million people have been affected. Authorities have declared five regions — with an estimated total population of 24 million — to be in a state of emergency. While assistance is reaching many children and families in need, thousands of lives are still at risk. The cyclone has left more than one million people homeless and destroyed thousands of homes and schools.
