Why Brazil?

Emerging from over half a century of military intervention into domestic politics, and with an ambitious president at the helm, Brazil has spent the latter part of the 2000s ascending among the top ten world economies. As a result, doing business in Brazil has become big.

Following the election of president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in 2003, the administration has established a stable economy aided by greater privatisation and deregulation. With well-developed agricultural, mining, manufacturing, and service industries, Brazil is fast becoming a land of opportunity. Brazil has been expanding into world markets and now exports several products, including airplanes, vehicles, coffee, and more. As well, the country has been increasing its development of hydroelectric power and the creation of wind farms. Such alternative energy projects have created a variety of business opportunities for investors as well as jobs for local Brazilians.

The US's Ford Motor Co. announced that it will spend 4 billion reals ($2.3 billion) to expand its operation in the growing Brazilian market. This is the largest investment the American car company has ever made in Brazil. The auto industry in Brazil, South America's largest economy, is headed for record sales, according to the country's automakers association. Every automaker appears to be taking Brazil seriously, not wanting to miss the opportunity to capitalize on its growing market and expanding middle-class.

Telecommunication business opportunities are also on the rise in Brazil. Whether it's cell phones or Internet communications, these types of business opportunities are everywhere, along with manufacturing. Almost a third of Brazil's GDP is accounted for with the manufacturing of automobiles, computers, aircraft, and other durable goods. As software programming quickly becomes a global commodity, Brazil offers plentiful resources with advantages for North American companies by way of similar time zones, increased travel options, and low cost IT professionals.

In ten years Brazil wants to increase the inflow of funds coming from foreign tourists by 304%, to $17.6 billion. The country is betting it will and receive 11.1 million visitors a year by 2020. These targets are part of the newly launched Aquarela 2020 Plan, by the Ministry of Tourism, through the Embratur, Brazilian Tourism Company.

Brazil has a growing middle class, one of the largest in Latin America, that has not only expanded in numbers but in salary level and purchasing power, making it a much sought-after consumer base, for everything from deli meats to movies to Big Macs. Hundreds, if not thousands of international businesses have opened stores and websites in Brazil to attract customers, from European sports car companies to fast food chains.

Though it's common knowledge that Brazil will host the 2016 Olympic Games and the 2014 World Cup, Brazil has already become host to a large number of international events, conferences, and meetings in recent years, from academic conferences to important diplomatic meetings to major business events. Chances are that if you work in a globally-connected industry, there's a chance you may have to travel to Brazil within the next few years.
