Travel Insurance: What would happen in the case of an accident abroad?

Many are against purchasing travel insurance because they deem it too expensive. But, in the case of an accident abroad, the expense of medical care without travel insurance could result in financial ruin with repercussions that may last a lifetime.

At the moment, the medical costs for Brits when theyre abroad are on the rise. Alarmingly, if you developed a hip condition in the United States and werent covered by insurance, youd be paying as much as 22,531 in health care. A heart attack in Spain would cost you as much as 35,000 for consequent operations. Even in countries that have made healthcare agreements with the UK, the holiday-maker might be covered for the cost of treatment, but without travel insurance they would still not be covered for the cost of the ambulance ride to the hospital. And, lastly, many hospitals abroad dont discharge patients even those suffering the most minor of accidents like a cut foot until they have a guarantee of imbursement; if you cant produce the cash or an official payment plan, you might find yourself stuck in a hospital waiting-room for a very long time.

In addition to the high costs of medical care on vacation, the fact that many companies offer all-inclusive policies at extremely reasonable rates should encourage the holiday-maker wary of being ripped off. For trips to Europe, for example, insurance costs just 25 for each week of the holiday from most agencies, and not only covers medical care but also such mishaps as loss of luggage, personal belongings, repatriation costs and cancelled or delayed flights. A tip would be to make sure you purchase travel insurance online rather than from commercial travel agencies; these companies, looking to boost their own profits, can charge you up to six times the cost of buying insurance separately. Go Travel for example, charges just 16 for travel insurance covering a 21-day trip to Europe. Even so, be scrupulous even when scouring deals online. The most expensive insurance agreement does not necessarily mean youll be covered for a greater number of unforeseen problems.
