The Best Beaches in Kefalonia, Greece
The island of Kefalonia - the largest of the Ionian Islands in Western Greece - has a breathtaking landscape of contrasting high mountain peaks and stunning white shore-lines. What makes the beaches of Kefalonia so attractive are their wild beauty, their seclusion, and their variety: there are many bays to explore, each for their own particular charm. Here are three of the islands hot spots to help you get started.
Pessada
Pessada, located 8 miles south-east of the capital Argostoli and five miles from the airport, is a simple, unspoilt and secluded stretch of sandy beach. With steps and stones leading to the water, this is a perfect beach for those who like walking and exploring the water-life sheltered beneath the rocks. The coves are great for some privacy while sunbathing, and the beautifully clear green-blue water ideal for snorkelling and swimming. Youll have to go to the nearby Agios Thomas beach if you get hungry: here youll find homely tavernas selling delicious and inexpensive food.
Lourdas
This 1km long beach is located at the south coast of Kefalonia, the most untouched part the island (it has only one resort). The beach, off the main road to Argostoli, is reached by a winding road which meanders its way down from Vlachata, after which you step onto a bay of silver sand, a shingle enclosed by a larger bay and warm turquoise water that seems to change in colour throughout the day. If you can, try and get one of the apartments that are situated on the beach itself this is a dream location for those who relish seclusion and enjoy watching the sun set over the sea, and falling asleep to the sound of the waves lapping against the shore. If you want to explore the other beaches in the Southern region of the island, we recommend that you hire a car.
Antisamos
Antisamos, touted as being one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, is famous for being the location of the filming of Captain Corellis Mandolin. White pebbles, an azure sea and clusters of nearby olive groves make this beach a must-see for all those looking for wild, untamed landscapes. The beach is only accessible by one road, which leads from the town of Sami. Other than a small kiosk selling drinks and crisps, there is only one expensive taverna, so you might want to bring your own packed lunch to keep you going throughout the say.
Greek holidays are made easy, as destinations are easy to get to with a range of airlines now flying direct to Europes capitals and major airports. Fly Monarch, for example, offers a range of cheap flights to Europe.
