The Canary Islands
The Canary Islands are a major European travel destination known for their sun, scenery, nightlife, seafood and good transport links. Located just off the west coast of Africa, the Canary Islands are made up of seven major islands: Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, El Hierro, La Gomera, La Palma, Lanzarote and Tenerife. All of the islands are territories owned by Spain and the population is made up of a mix of Spanish, European and Portuguese inhabitants. Two of the main islands are explored below.
Gran Canaria
This is the largest of the islands by population in the Canary archipelago and it is often referred to as a miniature continent because of its different climates and landscapes and with its variety of sun, sand, sea, nightlife and scenery it has something to offer everyone. Those in pursuit of great nightlife need look no further than the island’s capital, Las Palmas or any one of the resorts in the south, where music, sun and cocktails flow in abundance. Those after the island’s natural beauty should explore its central mountain range, which at a height of about 2000 metres is interspersed with impressive canyons, as well as the obvious attractions of the island’s white-sandy beaches and crystal clear waters.
Tenerife
The largest of the islands by land mass is also the tallest, with the peak of the Pico del Teide towering over the island at 3700 metres high. A barren east coast contrasts with the lush western side, which is where you’ll find the majority of tourists. Puerto de la Cruz is a great place to stay at as it has good transport links and the area itself is an interesting combination of tourist resort and authentic local town, complete with traditional Canarian architecture. Tenerife has become notorious for its nightlife, but thankfully the majority of Brit tourists hell-bent on consuming as much alcohol as they can before being ‘blue-lighted’ away is largely restricted to the club strip of Playa de las Americas.
This is the place to go if you want a large concentration of pubs, bars and all-night clubs. For an all together more authentic Canarian experience head for the towns of Puerto de la Cruz or Santa Cruz for an evening’s entertainment. Here you will find charming bars and restaurants run by local people and in the carnival time of mid-February these two towns really come alive.
